a few days ago a relative from Penang came a visiting to our

dialet (in fact,i know nut) i just stay mute and just gave her a warm
sweet smile..my
mom knowing she is coming, she had prepared her's specialty for
lunch..while we start digging in, my mom went to the kitchen for don't
know what..so it was me and this aunty coutinue with the makan..while
eating, she (aunty) said something to me, like, "ho chak" chin jek "ho
chak"..i know "ho chak" MEAN DELICIOUS..so i reply saying, "chak sai
la"2 ( eat more la2)..as i want to show my generosity and hospitality
to her, i ask her to "chak sai la"2..BUT she gave me a very nasty
look..her BIG eyes kept looking at me furiously and i wonder WHY?? at
that moment, my mom came in, she look up at my mom, said in hokkine..bla
blaaaa blaaa( me not understand what she saying) "chak sai" bla blaaa
blaaa..my mom turn to me angrily..ANNIE!!! did u ask aunty to "chak sai"
or not?? i say, yes! what's the problem??..she enjoy eating the food
saying "ho chak" so i asked her to eat more lo..my mom told me, i ask
aunty to "EAT SHIT"...huhh!!??? u mean "chak sai" mean eat shit??
OMG!!..what a big mess i'm into....
moral of the story....if u do not understand what people is talking about.."just shut up!!"..lols..

Annie, what I dun understand is....how did you and yr auntie
communicate all these years, ever since you were young..? I presumed yr
auntie must be yr mum's sister...right..? So, naturally she shud be
speaking the dialects that yr mum speaks too.....
In
our family circle, it is quite habitual for us to say: "Lai, lai, jiat,
jiat..." (Come, come, eat, eat)...or to ask our guests "ho jiat
bo?".....whereas in canto, we will most commonly say: "Sek dor ti (eat
more)"....we dun normally say "sek sai huei(eat all finish)..not unless
you re refering to Jerry, of coz....

SSS, I think annie's case is d same like my
younger bro. We're Hakka + Hokkiean & we speak Hokkiean at home.
However, some older neighbour who're my parent's friends speak Hakka
& since young, we listen to their conversation. & fortunately
among my friends, many are Hakka, thus, i hv d opportunity to practice.
When
it comes to my younger bro, he has some opportunity to listen, though
not at "meriah" as last time in kampung, but he doesn't hv much Hakka
friend. & Now, he understand, but kenot speak.
As for Annie, she was not into Hokkien environment, thus, she's worst... SHe shud exposed more to "Hua Hee Tai" all the Hokkien Taiwanese drama to pick-up. lols
ya
lo, u r right.. I'm always being victimized when it comes to dining
table.. haiz!!! if it's some speciality which u or Annie cook, it's
different.. even though it might be difficult to swallow, still hv to
finish it..

my family doesn't speak hokkien as well. In fact, I grown up with
no friends around speaking hokkien (actually it's my regret that didn't
pick up hokkien). But that doesn't mean you should not know some simple
phrase lah.
same thing that we do not speak Tamil, but sure you know one or two phrases of Tamil right?
